The first time she saw him
He was pretty and humble.
His smile so gentle and sweet,
She couldn’t help but wonder
“Will he notice me at all!”
(The woman in a mask)
As a gesture of good will
She threw him a smile
And he noticed her forthwith.
In no time they were married,
Happily married.
(The woman in a mask)
Not long after their first child
He began staying out long
Liquor and cigarettes in his breath
And he barely spoke.
When he did, he spoke with his hands
(The woman in a mask)
When he first hit her
She cried herself to sleep…
Convinced it was a mistake
Her fault, his one time mistake
Now, she endures it everyday
(The woman in a mask)
Like most good,
God fearing women
She is masked in silence
Scorched in her own silent tears
Taking her battles in silence
Knees down, chin up, in tears
She cries to God
To lift her cup
(The woman in a mask)
