Author Wanjiru M. Thuku has a new book out.
It is not surprising that I went for this second book even though it is children’s book.
Ms Thuku is easy to read as she is great at weaving a web of simple words that evoke great imagination in the reader.
This book carries three short stories that are full of lessons for the younger generation, targeting the ages between 5 and 13 years.
To sum them up, How Justo Became an Environment Champion carries the important lessons of environmental conservation.
The author effortlessly passes the message that without trees and forests, lack of food, floods and human-animal conflict will be rampant and it is not beneficial.
The natural world is beautiful.
The story also imparts the message of collaboration between the govt and the community in order to achieve environmental goals; and the importance of a reward system.
Kenyan authors are starting to teach the young generation good manners as parents get busy.
The second short story, Tati’s First Day in School, is about a young girl’s first day at school.
There are a lot of lessons about manners; relationships with adults and at school etc.
These lessons are emphasised in the last story Agego the Fearless Giant.
It is perhaps very cataclysmic to learn that human relationships are to be nurtured and that fear is a bad emotion.
By getting interested, approaching and speaking to the giant, Adi solved a big mystery and helped the giant back home.
Here, kids get a glimpse of space travel and an introduction that humans are not alone in the universe; even as they sharpen their reading skills.
My kids enjoyed reading this book, yours definitely will.
